Six Things to Know About IPL

If you want to achieve healthy and youthful-looking skin, IPL is an established and versatile treatment. IPL delivers countless benefits. IPL, short for intense pulsed light, is one of the most common in-office treatments for many skin concerns, from fine lines to brown spots.

IPL technology has advanced compared to a decade ago. The latest IPL—Sharplights Omnimax, offers shorter treatment sessions and faster results, making it a lunchtime treatment that pays off.

1. IPL USES LIGHT BUT IS NOT A LASER

IPL is a technology that uses multiple wavelengths of light to treat many skin conditions. Specific wavelengths target brown areas of skin by heating the pigment then lifting it to the skin's surface, where it naturally falls away. Others aim at fine blood vessels (redness and broken capillaries) to create a more even skin tone.

Its multiple wavelengths address various problems at the same time. If you desire to treat several issues simultaneously, IPL may be the most efficient treatment.

2. A PHOTO FACIAL CREATES RESULTS THAT REGULAR FACIALS CANNOT

Even though IPL is often referred to as a photo facial, it's a medical procedure, not a spa treatment such as microdermabrasion or a hydra facial. Intense Pulsed Light addresses different skin concerns at the same time: fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne, broken capillaries, enlarged pores, better collagen production and improved skin texture. These esthetic facials cannot replicate the results of IPL.

3. IPL CAN HELP MAINTAIN YOUNGER ACTING SKIN

IPL can reverse the genetic signs of age at a cellular level. A single session of IPL produces a visible change in the dermal and epidermal layers. For optimal results, a series of three to five is recommended. Follow-up treatments performed a few times a year keep skin clear and radiant.

4. NOT ALL IPL TREATMENTS ARE EQUAL

Not all IPL devices are identical? Differences in quality and wavelength ranges, and the more varied the field, the more comprehensive your treatment can be.

Consider your treatment experience: older, less powerful machines require longer, may not provide as much improvement per treatment and are less comfortable than modern technology.

We use the newest Sharplight Omnimax S4. It is considered state-of-the-art due to its ability to treat sunspots, broken capillaries, acne, and even reduce hair. This IPL technology is fast and has ultimate cooling, meaning quicker treatments and better patient comfort.

5. IPL WORKS FOR MOST PEOPLE

Older clients concerned about skin tone are great candidates for IPL and younger patients with sun damage. Many people can benefit from intense pulsed light regardless of the age or condition of their complexion.

Age isn't a restriction, but generally, IPL isn't recommended for every skin colour because broadband light energy targets pigment, which can cause damage to Darker skin tones. Microneedling and Chemical Peels may be a better option for more melanin-rich skin.

6. IPL IS A FAST AND CONVENIENT TREATMENT

IPL has always been a lunch-hour treatment. A session for the face may take as little as 15 to 30 minutes, with minimal (if any) downtime—some patients experience redness and mild swelling, followed by a darkening of existing spots in the following days, as the body goes through its healing process to slough off the targeted pigment.
